Diet & Nutrition

The scientific evidence strongly supports good nutrition and diet in general, as it directly impacts the health of all bodily systems and functions. A healthy diet will help you maintain a healthy body weight, which is critical for effective treatment of knee OA.

The impact of nutrition on osteoarthritis is a growing area for research. However, at this stage there is no one diet that has been shown to reduce OA symptoms. It is important to be aware of any ‘diets’ or ‘supplements’ that claim to cure OA.

If you have reduced your activity levels due to your knee arthritis or other reasons, it is important that your diet is adjusted to match your new energy requirements.  One of the simplest and most effective ways to do this is to reduce your portion size at meal times.  The table below provides information about each food group and the recommendations on the number of serves from each of the food groups that you should be aiming for each day.

Giving consideration to your overall diet is an expansive topic, and it is best to consult with an expert dietician who can perform a full analysis and provide a set of recommendations and implementation plan. This can be done with the intention to lose weight or simply to improve your health
