Chondroitin

About

Chondroitin is a nutritional supplement containing chondroitin sulphate, a substance that is naturally found in articular cartilage. Manufacturers claim it reduces pain and may change the progress of OA.

In the process of cartilage erosion suffered by knee osteoarthritis patients, chondroitin sulphate is lost from the cartilage matrix. The theory is that taking supplements of chondroitin sulphate will bolster the failing cartilage with the nutrient it requires. This would then protect the cartilage from enzymes that break it down, slowing the degradation. There are also claims it helps the cartilage retain water and increases its shock-absorbing capacity.

Chondroitin typically comes in tablet form, but can be found as a powder. Recommended dosages are between 800mg to 1,200mg daily, in two doses. It is commonly regarded as a slow-acting supplement, needing up to six weeks before an effect is noticed. If there is no effect after three months, you should consider stopping treatment.

Chondroitin is often mixed with glucosamine, although the scientific evidence shows little support of this having any positive effect.

Be Aware

Some chondroitin tablets may contain high levels of manganese, which could be problematic for some patients if used long-term. If you are allergic to sulfonamides, start with a low dose of chondroitin sulfate and watch for any side effects.

Chondroitin taken with blood-thinning medication like NSAIDs may increase the risk of bleeding.

Other possible side effects include diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain.
